June Earthquake Update

17 June 2011

Motovated is still up and running following the earthquake on the 13th of June!

We were lucky enough to re-open on the 14th of June, following the magnitude 6.3 earthquake. We had few breakages compared to the February quake, however it was a frightening experience for all.

Check out the pictures of Greg and Darrell's work stations after the earthquake. We are glad to report that both Greg and Darrell survived the ordeal. Greg and Damien (who was visiting Greg at the time), narrowly escaped harm by diving under Greg's desk. We can now report that the office is safer for our visitors, with all book shelves firmly fastened to the wall!

Motovated's Key Learnings from the June Earthquake

  1. Hiding under desks is not for pansies
  2. Books shelves are more dangerous than they look
  3. When it comes to desk size, bigger is better. You never know when you will have visitors!

The June earthquake was classed as an 8 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, as compared to a 9 for the February quake. However both measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. The Modified Mercalli Scale is an interesting scale. Rather than using scientific data, it is based on information gathered from people who have experienced the quake. It is then classed as a certian intensity based on the physical reaction of people, structures and the environment as described in this chart.

See this article on Geonet if you would like to see peak ground accelerations or any other interesting details. Note that Motovated is in the "red zone" on the ground accelerations chart with approximately 1g of acceleration.

We wish all the best to those who are still cleaning up from the quake.

Kia Kaha Christchurch!
