Dunedin Seminar Update
29 OCTOBER 2010
On 23rd Sep 2010, in conjunction with Otago Institute of Design, Jonathan Prince from Motovated Design & Analysis presented two free seminars on Developing Products to
Deliver Value. One seminar was aimed at design industry; the other directed towards design students.
Both seminars demonstrated ways to improve innovation, decrease development spending and increase return on investment using
proven design systems. |
|
They also covered insights into how to enhance product development process in the following 4 key areas:
- Generating Innovative/ Engineering solutions
- Decreasing Time to Market
- Reducing Development Cost
- Improving Product Quality
Dunedin Industry Seminar
The seminar generated a lot of great discussion around the options for commercialising your product and how best to get it into the market.
Mark Miller, GM of the Applied Design Research Centre had some very interesting observations in regards to the realities of getting to
market quickly to avoid been swallowed up as a ‘me too’ product and capitalising on your idea.
Industry's perception of the value of Industrial Design as a discipline can still be very centred around making a product look
good. The realities is this is only a small part of the value that ID provides to the design process. The real value in my opinion,
is around the focus on understanding, and interpreting, the customer need and then translating that into a product that addresses the real
opportunity and creating that point of difference in the market.
OiD Design School Seminar
This was aimed at providing the design students with the realities of what they can expect when they get to industry. Which I think provided
them with some real world insights into the engineering and Product development community.
