Motovated Design & Analysis Newsletter - December 2008

Hello everyone,

Well, we’re in the home stretch of the run-down to the end of the year, and this will be our last newsletter of 2008! We have another puzzle for you, the results of the Karting Challenge and our office hours over the holidays. Our 2009 desktop calendars will also be out very soon, so keep an eye out for them in the mail. If you have changed your mailing address this year, please let us know so we can get them sent out to you. Have a great holiday season, from everyone here at Motovated.

Motovated 2009 Calendar cover It’s that time of year again, and our 2009 calendars will be in the post soon. We have worked on some great projects this year, thanks to all our clients who gave us permission to use their images!

Karting Challenge Results

Motovated’s annual Karting Challenge was held last month, and it was a lot of fun. With 24 entries and only 3 points between the top 3 teams it was a great race, with the Designline team taking out the top spot - well done! Thanks to everyone who came along and made it a great night.

Office Hours over Christmas and the New Year

Motovated will be officially closed from:

Wednesday 24th December 2008 through to Monday 12th January 2009

We will be in periodically to support clients over that period, so don’t hesitate to ask if you have an urgent matter to discuss.

Outsmart your colleagues - Christmas for Engineers....

In the not-too-distant past, strings of Christmas lights were wired in series (to save wire!) so that if one light bulb blew out, none of the lights would work.

Series of christmas lights

If you were faced with fixing a broken string of lights, how would you find the defective bulb? Secondly, what is the minimum number of steps required to find the defective bulb in a string of 64 bulbs (assuming there is only one faulty bulb)? Bonus points for deriving the rule for any number of bulbs. Send your correct answer to competition@motovated.co.nz to be in with a chance of winning a $50 Mitre 10 voucher.

Answer to last issue’s puzzle

The last puzzle was: There are six eggs in a basket. Six people each take one of the eggs. How can it be that one egg is left in the basket? We had some very funny answers, but lots of people got this right - the last person to take an egg takes the basket as well, hence there is still one egg left in the basket.

Congratulations to Geoff Slater from Autobend Ltd, a Mitre 10 voucher is on its way to you.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

The team at Motovated wishes you a great Christmas and relaxing holiday season, and look forward to working with you in the New Year. Instead of sending out Christmas cards, Motovated will again donate the money to the New Zealand Family and Foster Care Federation.
