Motovated Design & Analysis Newsletter - December 2009

Hello everyone,

In our last issue for the year we want to thank all our clients and industry contacts for the great projects we've been able to work with them on. We have really enjoyed seeing their ingenuious and innovative projects develop and progress.

We have also included a few sneak-preview pictures from our 2010 calendar - thanks to everyone who gave us permission to use their images! As promised in the previous issue, we have links to articles in Bright magazine and the CECC magazine Update featuring Motovated and our partners.

Also in this issue we have an update on Peter Caughey's success at the World Jetsprint Championships, some Christmas jokes, another puzzle and answers to last issue's question. See below to check our office hours over the summer break, and we look forward to diving right back in next year for more great projects.

Motovated in the news

Motovated has featured in a couple of magazine articles recently. Bright magazine did an article on Working in Virtual Reality, highlighting the advantages and benefits of 3D CAD design and analysis. Motovated also appeared in conjunction with Sprintec in the December issue of Update which you can read below.

Peter Caughey and Motovated win the World Superboat Crown...again!

For those of you following the World Jetsprint Championships in Australia, it was an exciting final with Motovated sponsored Peter Caughy defending his title against some tough competition. Combined with a challenging track to navigate, broken starter motors, damaged jet nozzles and all the weather extremes, the event had it's share of thrills and spills.

The NZ 2010 Jetpro Jetsprinting Championship begins soon with a post-Christmas visit to Wanganui's Shelterview Raceway on 27 December for the start of the six round series.

Outsmart your colleagues...

This issue's brain teaser is a logic puzzle, and might be a good one to do over the summer holiday...

You have twelve coins, and you know that one is fake. The only thing that distinguishes the fake coin from the real coins is that its weight is imperceptibly different. The only equipment you are allowed to use is a perfectly balanced scale.

What is the smallest number of times you must use the scale in order to always find the fake coin?

NOTE: you can use only the scales and the 12 coins themselves to determine the solution (no other weights, pencil marks etc)

Send your correct answer to competition@motovated.co.nz to be in with a chance of winning a $50 Mitre 10 voucher.

Christmas Jokes

In keeping with the holiday season, here are some Christmas jokes (with the answers at the end of the newsletter).

  1. What Christmas Carol is a favourite of parents?
  2. What kind of candle burns longer, a red candle or a green candle?
  3. What does a cat on the beach have in common with Christmas?
  4. How do sheep in Mexico say Merry Christmas?
  5. Why does Santa have 3 gardens?

Answer to last issue's puzzle

Double Jeopardy Puzzle Check your answer to October issue's question here: What is the question you ask to ensure your freedom?

The solution is: ask one robot what the other robot would say in answer to the question "which door leads to freedom?"

Then go through the opposite door.

(an alternative answer to this was to ask "what would the other robot say is the door that leads to death?", which will always give you the 'safe' door)

Last issue's puzzle winner...

Congratulations to John Williamson from Martin Hydraulics, a $50 Mitre 10 voucher is on its way to you - just in time for your Christmas shopping!
