Hello
again and welcome to 2007,
We hope
you enjoyed your summer break and managed to find a bit of sunshine during your
holiday. In this issue, Motovated would like to provide you with another tip,
offer you some free COSMOS training, introduce you to some new staff members and
provide a bit of
humour.

Tips and Tricks: Designing for torsional loading |
Cross bracing |
 |
As seen
from the figures opposite, diagonal bracing adds significant torsional stiffness
compared to conventional cross bracing. This is because the diagonal members are
primarily under bending stress and are very rigid.
Perpendicular cross members are subject to torsion which cause the twisting
action (and deflection)
So, to
get better torsional stiffness with less material and weight, use diagonal
braces wherever you can!

A bit of fun... |
|
An arts student, sick of working at McDonalds for what had seemed an
eternity decided to get a job working as a
labourer at a construction site.
Being a usual overconfident artsy, he soon began to brag to the other workers
about all sorts of things. One day he decided to brag that he could outdo anyone
in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of the wiry engineer
on the site. After several minutes, the engineer had had enough.
"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is," said the engineer. "I
will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that
building that you won't be able to wheel back."
|
|

|
"You're on, little guy!" the braggart replied. "Let's see what you got."
The engineer reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then,
nodding to the young man, he said, "All right: Get in."
