Motovated Design & Analysis Newsletter - October 2010

Hi everyone,

We seem to have hit the end-of-year rush already, and we have heaps of projects on the go! We do our very best to be responsive and flexible to meet our client's needs and timeframes, so if you have something you want done before Christmas please let us know as soon as possible so we can schedule you in.

We have also been busy presenting seminars around the country. Jonathan Prince has been conducting a series of Product Development and Design workshops in Hamilton and Dunedin, which you can read about below. I was also invited by Dr Elijah Van Houten at Canterbury University to give a guest lecture for the Computational Solid Mechanics course. My focus was on re-entrant cracks, using 'real-world' boundary conditions, and what employers are looking for from new graduates. Luckily it seemed well-received by the students!

Also in this issue we have an update on another rail order press release and a 1990's article from Metal Magazine highlighting New Zealand's capabilities for large scale manufacturing. We also have some another design tip, puzzle, some project management proverbs, and answers to last issue's competition.

Enjoy the read!

Article - We Can Do It!

This is an article from a December 1990 issue of Metal Magazine, highlighting New Zealand's Fitzroy Engineering's manufacturing capability for large scale projects. Their can-do attitude is a great example. Please read the article, as it highlights tough times in a previous era which we can relate to today...

Tips & Tricks - Choosing Sections for Torsional Loading

Torsion

This tips & tricks we highlight some general rules for selecting sections for torsion, and show how to get angular displacement values out of a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) solution. For driveshafts especially, it is important to verify the angle of twist and ensure it is within suitable limits.

Project Management Proverbs

  • The most valuable and least used word in a project manager's vocabulary is "NO".
  • The user does not know what he wants until he gets it. Then he knows what he does NOT want.
  • Nothing is impossible for the person who doesn't have to do it.
  • There's never enough time to do it right first time but there's always enough time to go back and do it again.
  • Change is inevitable - except from vending machines.
  • If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
  • There is no such thing as scope creep, only scope gallop.
  • Furious activity does not necessarily equate to efficient progress and is no substitute for understanding.
  • The first 90% of a project takes 90% of the time, the last 10% takes the other 90%.
  • Any project can be estimated accurately (once it's completed).

Outsmart your colleagues...

Here is this issue's puzzle:

You're on a quiz show and your dream car is hidden behind one of four doors. A clue is pinned to each door:
  • Door A: It's behind B or C
  • Door B: It's behind A or D
  • Door C: It's in here
  • Door D: It's not in here

Three of the clues are false and only one is true. Behind which door will you find the prize?
