Motovated Product Design Variation Reduction Strategies – Axiomatic Design
As the KISS principle states – Keep It Simple Stupid! – Your design should be as simple as possible. Sometimes it is not that clear how to measure simplicity, especially when designing systems which are complex by definition. Despite the complexity of your product, having in mind the Axiomatic Design Theory during the design process will avoid unnecessary complexity and therefore will make your design less sensitive to variations.
The two principles of Axiomatic Design with a graphical example to easily remember them.
See below a comparison of the interdependencies between functional requirements (FRs) and design parameters (DPs) in different designs of a water tap. Print it and stick it on your cubical wall, it might be quite handy!
